Region and State Review
by Stephen Van Gorp
The region tournament ended up being very
eventful with four of Dominion’s tennis lines making it to the
semifinals. The Dominion girls doubles had both of their teams make
it to the region finals and there was a huge upset with the number
two doubles of Katie Hammond and Abby Rives beating the number one
doubles of Chelcie Griffith and Heather Graham. The match was closely
contested with the girls going to three sets, but the freshman sophomore
duo pulled through with the victory. Also, representing the singles
for guys, was Michael Besch who made it to the semifinals and ended
up being the number four seed from the region in the state tournament.
Matthew Jackson and Stephen Van Gorp came through once again as the
region tournament winners for doubles with a three set victory over
the number one doubles from Riverside Military Academy.
Also the State Individual Tournament started on April 16 and the Dominion
tennis team made the long haul down to Tifton to play in it. Katie
Hammond and Abby Rives made an excellent showing for their first State
appearance by winning their first match in two sets, but they unfortunately
lost their second match in a three setter. Also Heather Graham and
Chelcie Griffith played in the State Tournament, but they unfortunately
lost in their first match in a three set struggle. Michael Besch also
lost his first match to a number one seed from Mount de Sales. Also
Matthew Jackson and Stephen Van Gorp won their first match of the
tournament in two sets, but lost their second match to Westminster’s
number two doubles. Although these matches ended the season, the players
played very well over all and are looking to make another strong attempt
at next year’s state tournament.
