Jenkins and Edwards: The Unlikely Duo
by:Nathan Bennett

For years, DCHS running sports have led Dominion athletics to higher limits. With the recent Cross Country State Championship under his belt, Coach Edwards is looking forward to this year's track season as one of the best in school history. With 7 boys and 7 girls favorited to win their events it seems as if head track coach Javier Jenkins and assistant coach Brett Edwards have their work cut out for them at this years AAA GISA State meet. But to understand this complex coaching duo, one must look at their diverse history. One hails from the rainy pacific northwest and another from the Bronx. One has seen inner city life up close and personal and the other grew up in the suburbs. One was a sprinter in high school and the other a distance runner. One made his name in football and the other played only one year of football as the smallest player on the team. One will eat hot sauce on just about anything he eats and the other can't handle the mildest of hot sauces. One is a family man, the other is still living the bachelor life. Coach Edwards first met Javier Jenkins the fall of 2001, before Dominion had moved from their former location, Lockhart. They soon formed a fast friendship despite their drastic differences. "I thought he was a little rough around the edges" said Coach Edwards when asked to recount his first impression of the NYC native. "I wasn't sure if he wanted to tackle me or use his great karate skills." Edwards immediately respected Head Coach Jenkins tenacity and passion for the sport. Their first year coaching together was in the Spring of 2002. Edwards assumed the head distance coach position, replacing the legendary John Maphet that preceded him. "It was enjoyable seeing us (Jenkins and Edwards) progress from not knowing each other to creating a successful team" says Edwards.

The Knights travel to Riverside Military Academy March 5th for their first meet.
