Dominion's track team continued their season this past Wednesday, March 12th, at Stratford Academy. While the weather improved over the last few weeks, so did the caliber of competition. While fighting off injuries and illness, both guys and girls competed well versus strong competition from Stratford, FPD, and Covenant.
The girls team suffered from injuries through out the night, missing both
Sheri Anne Forde in the distance events and Captain Caroline Gearhard in the sprints. Despite the loss of these strong scorers, many individuals held their own against the competition in Macon. Junior Kristen Chunn beat her previous time in the 400m dash by a full second, setting a new personal record (PR). Nicole Davis recovered from her last meet and managed to jump 16'1" in the long jump improving over a foot and a half as well as setting a new PR. Other improvements included Paisley Burklow and CJ Sparks both in the 800m run setting new PRs of 2:53 and 2:58 respectively and Ashley Johnson and Katie Gearhard improving their throws in the shot put to set new PRs with 25'11" and a 25'5 1/2". With these performances, the girls managed to get 3rd in the meet against a strong showing from last years state champions, FPD.
The boys came to compete against the reigning first and second place teams in GISA, FPD and Stratford Academy. These teams have a histroy of dominating GISA track and field in the recent past. The guys distance continued its reign getting the top two runners in the top four for every distance event. The field suffered from the injury to jumper Andrew Smith, who is hoping to return this Saturday at the Gator relays. The pole vaulters quickly filled the gap in points with Andrew Riess and Tyler Proffitt placing 2nd and 3rd with 8'6" and 8' respectively. Chul Won Chae placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 53.3. Meanwhile Aaron Nix and Justin Hipps won both of the hurdle events with Aaron in the lead for the 300h and Justin winning the 110h by a full hurdle with a time of 16.22. The night ended with an intense 1600m relay in which Junior Chul Won Chae poured on the speed to pull out a second place finish in the relay. All of these great performances added together to put Dominion guys over both FPD and Stratford and continue the winning season.
Dominion competes next at the Gator Relay March 15th against 22 other teams of varying levels of competition. |
